Background
The Universal Service Fund (USF), administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), provided communities with billions of dollars in telecommunications funding. Since 1999, the fund has distributed close to 100 billion dollars. The importance of USF in providing crucial communications services in high cost and low income areas, as well as rural health care facilities, schools and libraries, cannot be understated. Although the USAC site contains a plethora of useful information, it lacks user-friendly data formats, interactivity and effective data visualizations.
Result
As an internal project, Emprata created a website that helped to visualization the USF data found on the USAC site. Our hope was that these visualizations would paint a picture of the current USF state of play, and combined with broadband availability data, ultimately drive decision-making and help to shape the transition of USF to broadband. The result of our work is found on the following website: www.usfbroadband.com
